Evening Market Visit and Cooking Class in Paris

In our Evening Market Visit and Cooking Classes, we will start by visiting a market called the Saint Germain market. A covered market which is also one of the oldest in Paris – like Les Halles market was when it was still around Paris. After visiting the market we will head back to the school to spend between two and three hours – depending on what we are cooking that day – preparing an appetizer, main and dessert which you will then proceed to eat – while being served white and red wine – with your Chef. A great way to have a great dinner, learn to cook in the process and get to know a lot more about the local Parisian culture in the process. All these classes are hands-on, taught in English, set in a beautiful location, fun and instructive, and in small groups of maximum 12 people.

Our Evening Paris Market Visit and Cooking Class Step by Step

STEP 1: We will meet close to the market we will be visiting, the Marché Saint Germain.

STEP 2: While at the market learn about where the produce actually comes from, the particulars of Parisian food markets, buying etiquette and other cultural tips.

STEP 3: No market visit would be complete without some in-depth discussion of French cheeses, and tasting one of the best French cheeses!

STEP 4: Back at the school it is time to weigh, chop, dice and get ready to cook; we call this the first step of mise en place.

STEP 5: Once all ingredients are ready, it is time to cook; this is also a good time for your Chef to explain a bit of science or a bit of history, and sometimes both.

STEP 6: Plating dishes is a key part of a successful meal, so you will get plenty of opportunities to practice this too.

STEP 7: Time to have dinner with your Chef, who will share stories of French culture and food, and how they all tie together.

STEP 8: All the while enjoying your food and some white and red wine, bien sûr!

Tasty and informative

Reviewed by Paige on Tripadvisor, January 1 2021

We had a great time at our cooking class! The market visit was very informative, and I am still dreaming of the cheese we sampled. Once we got into the kitchen, Fred did a nice job of explaining what we were doing and why based on some of the science behind the cooking. He also picked recipes that I feel like we could actually make at home and did a good job of making sure we didn't mess anything up. I also appreciated the humor he injected into the course. Overall, would highly recommend this class to anyone looking to understand a little more about French cooking!

This was an amazing experience and we learned so much from French history, French cheese, and market shopping to knife techniques. We will do this again. Thanks so much Sara for a wonderful class and learning experience. You have such energy, and it was your personal touch that made our day.

Great afternoon in the kitchen!

Had an amazing day with the market tour, cheese shop lesson, and Fred showing us how to make a 3-course dinner. The food and wine tasted great - but the fun times cooking and meeting new people were even better. Took away a lot of great tips from Fred. We highly recommend you give it a try!

Discover French Culture through Other Food Experiences

Discovering culture through food is what we want to do when we travel. So we have developed all our experiences with that simple idea in mind: ensure that you learn both about the topic at hand, but also about French culture in the process. So in our food tours, we will talk about the history of various aspects of French food, in our cooking class in Paris about how certain dishes became so important in our culture. During our wine tastings, we will explore the regional differences in French culture. And, a regional residential holiday is an opportunity to deep dive French food culture to its core and foundation: the regional gastronomies, and the concept of terroir.
